Thank you everyone for your support! With your help we exceeded our goal.
Purchase land and build the Kpando Community Center.
Kpando suffers from a lack of community infrastructure as well as limited options for economic development and has a disproportionate number of orphaned children due to unsanitary living conditions, lack of established health care and widespread HIV/AIDS.
The community center will create a central hub within the village and will host educational programs, including adult literacy classes, women’s cooperatives, and all onevillage Volta Health Initiative clinics and programs. We believe that every community needs a central hub that gives open access to all local residents. We hope to finalize the purchase of land for the Kpando Community Center before January 2014 and plan on breaking ground shortly thereafter.
The center will take into account the individual structure of the community and its unique customs, traditions and history. It will last for years and years to come and will not just be a part of onevillage, we hope it will become an integral part of the community in Kpando and the surrounding area. The community will be integrally involved in the building and decision-making process. Without a shared interest in the hub, it will not succeed.
Our goal is bigger than simply empowering the residents of Kpando or Ghana. The creation of healthy and self-sustaining communities on a local level can empower and inspire regional, national and even planetary change. Although the work we do is very local, our goal is to create networks that foster a sense of global responsibility and ownership.
May Fundraising Events
We’ve teamed up with NYC-based Destination Backcountry to host an incredible day of family-friendly hiking at Minnewaska State Park in the foothills of the beautiful Shawnagunk Mountains, less than two hours from New York City. There are miles of great hiking trails, some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Northeast, and two lakes.
The trip is suitable for children of all ages and we’ll have several different options for levels of hiking difficulty. Trip price includes a delicious lunch, drinks, snacks, and guided hikes by licensed NY-state guides and outdoor educators.
$140 per adult and children are free. We are also offering roundtrip transportation from Brooklyn or Manhattan for an additional $20 per person. For more information contact Gregor Gomory at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit our event page on Facebook to RSVP
